Personal profile
Biography
I am a Lecturer in Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University. I have previously worked as an Associate Lecturer in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Newcastle, a casual academic and research assistant in the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney, and a Lecturer at the Australian College of Applied Psychology.
Teaching
I have experience as a lecturer, tutor, and course coordinator in several undergraduate and honours level courses. I have taught on a range of topics in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, including forensic psychology, criminal psychology, memory, research methods, emotion, personality, psychometric assessment, sex, gender, sexuality, substance use and addiction. My teaching philosophy includes creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students to develop real-world skills that they can apply in their professional careers. Through applying this pedagogy, I have won several prestiguous teaching awards.
Currently, I am the Unit Convenor for COGS2010: Memory.
Research interests
My research lies at the intersection between psychology and law. Many of the factors that are most common in cases of wrongful convictions - where individuals have been convicted of crimes they did not commit - are psychological in nature, such as mistaken eyewitness identification and false confessions. I am passionate about conducting innovative psycho-legal research that has the potential to improve legal procedures and prevent miscarriages of justice like these from occurring. I am also passionate about conducting research that can improve victims' access to justice.
My main research interests include:
- Identifying the factors that affect eyewitness recall or identification accuracy
- Exploring the impact of misinformation in eyewitness settings
- Identifying public perceptions of psycho-legal phenomena (e.g., public perceptions of wrongfully convicted individuals)
- Evaluating the implementation of evidence-based policing in Australia
- Improving research methodologies in forensic psychology
- Identifying the factors that affect juror decision-making and memory
My research has included a number of diverse forensic populations, including child witnesses, lawyers, correctional officers, and police officers.
Research engagement
My research has featured in podcasts, newspapers articles, and on television. I have also written articles for The Conversation.
My work has been cited in a High Court of Australia judgment as well as in other legal cases. I have written submissions for the Australian Law Reform Commission based on my research on jury decision-making.
Research student supervision
I have experience supervising undergraduate, Honours, Master of Clinical Psychology, and PhD students on research projects, on topics including eyewitness memory, jury decision-making, memory and psychological wellbeing. I encourage any interested students to get in touch with me about research opportunities.
Teaching and Leadership
I am currently the co-course director for the Bachelor of Psychology (OUA). I also sit on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in the School of Psychological Sciences.
