Biography

Dr. Phong Vo is a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University and former Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He also previously held a Postdoctoral role at The University of Queensland, where he contributed to advanced environmental engineering initiatives focused on hazardous pollutants remediation, waste valorization and sustainable resource management.

Dr. Vo has involved in ARC projects for PFAS remediation, working with academic and industry partners to validate technologies such as foam fractionation and ion exchange resins. His PFAS research focuses on  treatment performance, and contaminated water systems.

With a strong interdisciplinary background, Dr. Vo leads innovative projects on the recovery of critical and rare earth elements from industrial waste streams, including steelmaking slag, mine tailings, and electronic waste. His research integrates bioleaching, adaptive laboratory evolution, and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to improve selectivity and efficiency in circular economy applications.

He has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and holds an h-index of 22, reflecting his scientific impact. Dr. Vo is also an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Hazardous Materials and Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering.

Passionate about translational research, Dr. Vo actively engages with government and industry stakeholders to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world implementation, especially in PFAS remediation, critical minerals recovery, and environmental biotechnology.
