Biography

Dr Janet Wade was awarded her PhD in Ancient History from Macquarie University. She also completed her Bachelor of Ancient History (Honours) and Postgraduate Certificate in Ancient History at Macquarie University.

Janet has convened units and worked on teaching teams for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate subjects focused on ancient Rome, Late Antiquity, Byzantium, Renaissance and Baroque Italy, and Modern Europe. She has taught intensive units onsite in the city of Rome related to the city, its art, politics, and society. Janet has also been involved in the set-up and teaching of History Education units (Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment). In addition, Janet has experience in professional Higher Degree Research (HDR) roles, including as Scholarships Officer and HDR Partnerships Coordinator.

Janet's postdoctoral awards include the Macquarie-Gale British School at Rome Fellowship, the British School at Rome’s Library and Archive Award, Australian Academy of the Humanities Travelling Fellowship, and Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. In addition to her research and academic career, she practices freelance editing and proofreading.

Janet is currently Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University and Early Career Research Affiliate with the Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE). She is also a Sessional Academic in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University and in the Faculty of Education and Arts at ACU.

Research interests

Janet’s research interests include seafaring deities, maritime rituals and practices, and the social history of sailors and merchants from the late Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity and Early Byzantium. She has a particular interest in seafaring and mercantile goddesses such as Isis Pelagia, Fortuna/Isis-Fortuna and Athena.

Her current research also includes the study of archival and photographic materials from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a focus on materials depicting the remains of ancient Roman and medieval towns, roads, harbours, and other monuments and infrastructure. She is particularly interested in the ways that ancient and medieval remains have been integrated into their modern landscapes and societies, with a strong focus on ancient Rome and contemporary Italy. 

Janet has published on maritime social and material culture, seafaring cults, and marine symbolism in the Greco-Roman world, Late Antiquity, and early Byzantium. She has also published on 19th and 20th-century amateur photographers and their archival collections, particularly those related to the ancient roads, sites, and countryside of Italy.
