Personal profile

Biography

Jessica completed her PhD at Macquarie University, studying the genomics of the Sydney rock oyster in collaboration with NSW Department of Primary Industries. Since then, Jessica has collaborated with several industry partners to complete projects in applied research, mostly associated with marine fisheries and aquaculture. Jessica is now an associate lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences, where she continues to lead an industry-driven research program and is the lead geneticist on several projects investigating Australian bivalves.

Research interests

Jessica is an evolutionary and molecular biologist with broad interests in genetic research that aims to find solutions for both industry and the conservation of biodiversity. Her research uses genomic technologies to answer questions that align within the common theme of ‘resilience’.

Key research interests include:

  • Resilience of wild and captive populations
  • Genomic basis of evolutionarily important traits
  • Connectivity of marine populations
  • Molecular species identification and delimitation

Teaching

Research student supervision

Jessica has experience as supervisor and mentor to higher degree research students, and is open to discussing options for Masters research projects.

Past students include:

  • Dameon Osborn - Genetic structure of the Doughboy scallop (Mimachlamys asperrima)
  • Teagan Pyne - Population genetics of Ylistrum balloti (Bernardi, 1861) in Western Australia
