Personal profile

Juan Quiroz is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Informatics, Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), Macquarie University. Prior to joining AIHI, he was a lecturer of computer science at Sunway University, Malaysia. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno (2010). From 2009-2014 he worked as a patent agent on patent preparation and prosecution of software and hardware patents.

Research interests

I am excited about applied machine learning and data science for real-world applications that can impact end-users. My current research focus is on machine learning for healthcare applications, including knowledge extraction from medical notes, natural language processing of medical texts, and the mining of smartphone and wearable data to deliver personalized medicine. I am particularly passionate about tackling mental health with artificial intelligence and computing, with the goal of empowering patients to monitor and manage their conditions by leveraging the data from their smartphones and wearables.

My prior research background includes applications of evolutionary computation for design computing, and I remain interested in the use of artificial intelligence for artistic and creative applications.

Research student supervision

I am looking for students with an interest in applying machine learning for healthcare. Topics explored in my research group include: extractive and abstractive summarization of medical notes and medical conversations, time-series prediction of clinical events from patient history, patient safety issues resulting from machine learning models, bias in machine learning models for healthcare, interpretability of deep learning models for doctor and patient decision making, transfer learning for healthcare applications, and machine learning for mental health and addiction.
