Research interests
My research focuses on the role of communication and the media in the building of relationships and identities in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts. It is also interested in the role of multilingualism in social and professional life. The current focus is on the use of online and social media to build communities involving schools and their families in multilingual Sydney. The research draws on 10 years' experience of examining media and ethnic and national identity construction in music-entertainment television in the People's Republic of China as well as a long-term interest in the cultural politics of English language teaching and intercultural and interlingual approaches to media/communications and music education. I am a member of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences' Multilingualism Research Centre, the Public Relations Institute of Australia and the Social Media Marketing Institute.
I welcome expressions of interest from prospective HDR candidates interested in areas relating to cultural and linguistic diversity, migration, identity and belonging, community engagement, strategic communication and public relations in such contexts as schools, universities, music, online and social media, radio and television.
