Dr Luan Luu is an early career post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Biomedical Science, Macquarie University. He completed his PhD at The University of Melbourne where he studied the Amyloid Precursor Protein in Alzheimer’s Disease. Upon obtaining his PhD he moved to Macquarie University and joined Angela Lairds lab where he investigates potential therapeutics for Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 3.
Dr Luan Luu focuses on therapeutics that enhances processes (macroautophagy) that degrade pathogenic misfolded proteins and organelles to restore cellular homeostasis. He has developed cellular models of Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 3 for screening potential therapeutics which can be trailed in animals of the disease. The compounds tested not only have a potential for the treatment of Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 3 but for other diseases that involve misfolded proteins, such as Huntington’s or other PolyQ disease.
