Research interests

Nature has always fascinated me, as well as how humans behave towards natural environments.  I’ve worked for the Dutch government for almost 10 years in nature conservation policy until I decided to do a PhD at Macquarie University (Australia) in collaboration with the University of Twente (Netherlands).

Current research

PhD thesis title: The Essentiality of Essential Biodiversity Variables: Implementation in nature policies

International agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, but also national polices require biodiversity monitoring. Many different indicators are used to inform policy. Innovative information products such as RS-enabled EBVs could aid in biodiversity monitoring. However, it is not clear where these scientific products can be utilised for policy reporting. Policy is often designed by area managers, policy makers and decision makers. RS-enabled EBVs are scientific products, designed by a scientific community. There is a mismatch between information RS-enabled EBVs deliver and what policy requires.

With my research, I aim to find common ground between nature conservation policy and RS-enabled EBVs, to aid biodiversity monitoring.
