Personal profile

Research interests

I am a Belgian-Australian linguist. My research is highly interdisciplinary and aims to demonstrate how Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) can be used as an analytical model to explore dialogical interaction in various socio-cultural contexts, including (post-colonial) politics, social media and higher education. My main objective is to highlight the theory’s versatility and the potential for social semiotics to provide in-depth computer-assisted descriptions and interpretations of language use in complex socio-cultural environments by integrating SFL with theoretical frameworks such as Appraisal, critical theory or other relevant concepts. By adopting a social justice approach, my work highlights potential disparities and seeks to foster critical thinking, facilitating social change. I have also worked as a Research Assistant at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), contributing to the enhancement of communication in cancer care services.

Teaching

After working as a literacy development trainer in New Caledonia for several years, I have been teaching and coordinating Academic Communication, English (literacy), Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Grammar, and European Studies courses, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have held sessional teaching positions in the Departments of International Studies and Linguistics, as well as the School of Education, at Macquarie University, Macquarie University College and elsewhere since 2014.
