Research interests

Dr Mark Butlin is a research associate in the field of biomedical engineering and cardiovascular haemodynamics. His research interests address the stiffness of large arteries as a health risk factor and using non-invasive cardiovascular factors as better predictors in the management of cardiovascular health. His work includes cross-discipline projects investigating end-organ damage in different arterial beds, including the brain and the eye. Dr Butlin designs and conducts studies to collect high quality in-vivo data and is well versed in the tools to analyse data, both big and small, to drill down to the key, useful outcomes. He is also a clear communicator and works toward translating complex concepts to succinct forms for time-poor clinicians, and easy to understand forms for patients and the public.

Teaching

Dr Mark Butlin first started teaching at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of New South Wales in 2007. His expertise is in the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and in biomedical device research. He continues to develop his teaching expertise, and has completed the Foundations in Learning and Teaching course at Macquarie University, and is a Senior Fellow of Advanced HE (SFHEA).

He currently teaches across the Bachelor of Clinical Science, Masters of Research, and Medical Doctorate programs within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is unit convenor for:
