Biography

Associate Professor Nazmul Huda currently holds the position of Director of Education within the School of Engineering. He brings a wealth of experience in the higher education sector, with a proven track record of driving transformational success through strategic leadership and impactful initiatives. Over the past decade, A/Prof. Huda has led several key growth initiatives across both undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Macquarie University, resulting in transformational success and significant advancements in curriculum development, student engagement, and academic excellence. 

A/Prof Huda joined Macquarie University as one of the founding academics involved in establishing the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering. He played a pivotal role in designing and developing the Mechanical Engineering curriculum, ensuring it was firmly grounded in sustainability principles to address the evolving needs of the engineering profession. Since then, he has assumed several key leadership roles within the School of Engineering including serving as the founding Director for both the Master of Engineering Management and the Master of Engineering (Professional) programs across five specializations, further expanding the School's postgraduate offerings and strengthening its commitment to producing industry-ready engineering professionals. He has also led the School's Higher Degree by Research (HDR) portfolio, overseeing the growth, development and mentoring HDR students. 

A/Prof. Huda's primary motivation throughout his academic career has been to educate and inspire the next generation of engineers to embrace and practice sustainability. His teaching and research focus on critical areas such as energy systems, resource recovery, circular economy principles, life-cycle analysis, recycling, and end-of-life considerations in product design. 

Before joining Macquarie University, A/Prof. Huda earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours). His deep interest in computational fluid dynamics, combined with a drive to develop innovative solutions for industrial challenges, led him to pursue postgraduate research, culminating in a PhD. Following this, he undertook nearly two years of Postdoctoral research, supported by funding from CSIRO and Outotec, where he contributed to advanced studies addressing key industrial problems.

He is an internationally acclaimed researcher specializing in urban mining, industrial ecology, sustainability, circular economy, and life-cycle engineering. His expertise and contributions to these fields have earned him widespread recognition. In addition to his research, he plays an active role in the global academic community, serving on review panels for various international funding bodies.

He is currently a member of the Faculty Board in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and also serving the role of Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports published by Nature.
