Biography

Associate Professor Nazmul Huda is a senior academic leader and the Director of Education in the School of Engineering at Macquarie University, where he drives strategic initiatives that elevate academic quality, expand program offerings, and strengthen the School’s national and international standing.  He provides strategic leadership in academic planning, curriculum innovation, quality assurance, internal and external accreditation, driving initiatives that strengthen program excellence and position the School for long-term growth and industry relevance. With more than a decade of experience in higher education leadership, he has consistently delivered transformational outcomes across undergraduate and postgraduate portfolios, shaping curriculum innovation, enhancing student experience, and fostering a culture of academic excellence.

As one of the founding academics for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering, A/Prof. Huda played a central role in designing a sustainability-driven curriculum aligned with the evolving needs of the engineering profession. His leadership has since extended across multiple domains, including serving as the founding Director of both the Master of Engineering Management and the Master of Engineering (Professional) programs—now among the Faculty’s highly successful and industry-aligned postgraduate offerings. He has also led the School’s Higher Degree by Research (HDR) portfolio, contributing to the growth, development, and mentorship of emerging research talent.

A/Prof. Huda’s academic mission is rooted in preparing the next generation of engineers to lead with sustainability, responsibility and innovation. His teaching and research focus on energy systems, resource engineering, circular economy principles, life-cycle engineering and decarnonisation technologies. Prior to joining Macquarie University, he completed his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and pursued postgraduate research driven by a strong interest in computational fluid dynamics. The core research output of his PhD thesis received the esteemed EPD Science Award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), United States, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing the scientific understanding of non-ferrous process metallurgy.  His PhD and subsequent Postdoctoral research—supported by funding from CSIRO and Outotec—advanced industrial solutions through high-impact computational and applied studies.

Internationally, A/Prof. Huda is recognised for his research in resources engineering, urban mining, industrial ecology, sustainability, circular economy and life-cycle engineering. He contributes actively to the global research community through service on a number of international funding review panels and serves a prestigious editorial role as a Board Member for Scientific Reports  published by Nature. He also contributes to strategic governance as a member of the Faculty of Science and Engineering Board within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

A/Prof. Huda is widely regarded as a strategic, forward-thinking academic leader committed to advancing sustainable engineering education and impactful research at scale. Through a combination of strategic vision, academic leadership, and global research engagement, A/Prof. Huda continues to advance engineering education and scholarship, shaping programs and initiatives that prepare future engineers to lead in a rapidly changing world.
