Biography

Dr Norman McCulla is involved in all stages of teacher education at Macquarie from undergraduate teacher preparation to postgraduate studies in educational leadership and doctoral research.

Research

Norman undertakes and supervises higher degree research in his areas of research interest that include:

  • Teacher career path trajectories
  • Teacher quality and professional standards
  • School leadership preparation and  development
  • New teacher development, pre-service to induction
  • School planning and reporting
  • Curriculum development and educational change
  • Human resource management in education
  • Program evaluation.

Learning and Teaching

In the undergraduate Teacher Education Program Norman teaches in areas related to the socio-cultural and historical aspects of education policy and practice.  In the postgraduate program he convenes or co-convenes the following units:  Leadership for Learning; Curriculum Studies; Human Resource Management in Education; and Leading the Learning of New Teachers.

Professional Background

Norman joined Macquarie after an extensive career as a teacher and senior educational administrator in the NSW Department of Education and Training.  As a teacher, Norman taught in primary, central and secondary schools in rural New South Wales and metropolitan Sydney as well as the RAAF School in Penang, Malaysia. As an educational administrator, Norman specialised in curriculum development, teacher professional development and educational change. In the curriculum field he led state and national curriculum development projects in literacy and numeracy.

Norman held the positions of A/Director of Professional Learning and Chief Education Office within the Department responsible for the overall policy co-ordination, planning and evaluation of the NSW Government Schools’ programs for teacher and school leader professional development.

 Norman has worked with all education sectors in NSW and nationally through his involvement with major professional associations such as the Australian College of Educators, where he has been Chair of the NSW Branch and a member of the National Council and National Board. He has also served as President of the NSW Institute of Senior Educational Administrators.

Norman chaired the Steering Committee for the NSW Quality Teaching Award, an award forteaching excellence offered by the Australian College of Educators, NSW Branch in associationwith the NSW Minister for Education.  The award encompassed all sectors of education, pre-school to university.

 Awards and Recognition:

2015-    National Fellowship, Australian Council for Educational Leaders.

2012-    Sir Harold Wyndham Medal, Australian College of Educators, which recognises “an outstanding contribution by an individual to the education of young people in New South Wales”.

1996-    Fellow, Australian College of Educators for services to education nationally in the areas of curriculum and teacher professional development.
