Biography

Dr. Nuosha Zhang joined Macquarie University as a Research Fellow in 2021. She is currently working on an ARC Linkage Project, "Natural flood management (NFM): Nature-based flood mitigation in the 21st century", which aims to identify signals of NFM, exploring nature-based techniques for flood management, and modeling their potential for flood mitigation.

Her research currently focus on understanding how the geomorphic structure of rivers, including features like geomorphic units, river planform, and valley setting, can influence flow and contribute to flood energy dissipation.

Previously, Nuosha worked on ARC Linkage project, “working with river recovery”. As part of this work, she tracked vegetation recovery over the last 70 years across all coastal rivers of NSW, using historical and satellite images. She also summarised river recovery patterns by mapping geomorphic units along river reaches at various recovery stages.

Nuosha completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2018. Her doctoral research examined the hydraulic effect of instream wood with different arrangement and its influence on river bank erosion, using field surveys and flume experiments.
