Biography
Emeritus Professor Pam Peters is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and an active researcher within the Department of Linguistics and Centre for Language Sciences at Macquarie University, where she directs several major projects:
- Australian and international English (Varieties of English in the Indo-Pacific (VEIP)) with partners in Australia, Europe, South Africa and Asia)
- online terminography (the TermFinder ™ termbanks in family law (for the Federal Attorney-General’s Department); in bilingual cancer medicine (partnering with the Macquarie Cancer Institute and Fudan University, Shanghai); and in disciplines such as Accounting, Genetic Biology and Statistics (partnering with academic staff across faculties)
- editorial style and online accessibility for general and scientific writing (via the StyleHub platform, in partnership with Biotext)
Professor Peters’s research on English linguistics is associated with leading the compilation of a suite of computerised corpora of Australian English for Macquarie University, and as Director of the University’s Dictionary Research Centre (2001-8). She was a member of the Editorial Committee of the Macquarie Dictionary from 1986 to 2006, and founding editor (1992) of Australian Style magazine. Her best-known monographs are the Cambridge Australian English Style Guide (1995), its sequelthe Cambridge Guide to Australian English Usage (2007), and the international Cambridge Guide to English Usage (2004). More recently she authored the Cambridge Dictionary of English Grammar (2013). Within the Linguistics Department she founded the graduate program in Editing and Publishing (1989), which continues as an online course in Editing and Electronic publishing. She became a Distinguished Editor of the Australian Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) in 2008. She has been a member of the ABC’s advisory committee on broadcasting language since 1996
