Biography

Raheel Hashmi is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Engineering. He is also the Program Convenor of Master of Engineering in Electronics Engineering degree. He is enthusiastic about curriculum development for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, engaging with integrating professional practice within curriculum, design-problem based learning, flip classrooms and pedagogical innovation. His research interests include novel antenna technologies and microwave/millimeter-wave devices for applications in communications sector, defence, and smart living. His research explores the electromagnetic response of artificially engineered materials, using them to manipulate electromagnetic radiation for creating simple, yet highly efficient antennas and wireless components. He has received over 2 million dollars worth of research grants, contracts and fellowships, which include funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Australian and German Governments, and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). He has contributed over 80 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, two scholarly book chapters, and is an inventor on two patent applications.

Raheel has received several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the 2018 IEEE NSW Outstanding Young Professional Award, 2017 Young Scientist Award (Field and Waves) from the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), the 2012 Commonwealth IPRS Award, the CSIRO OCE Ph.D. Fellowship, and the Institute’s Gold Medal from the CIIT, Pakistan. He has been a visiting researcher at CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (Australia), University of Stuttgart (Germany), and University of California Irvine (USA). He serves as an Associate Editor for the IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation, and as a Guest Editor for leading journals such as IEEE ACCESS, IEEE OJAP, Wiley's MOTL. He also serves as Detailed Assessor for the Australian Research Council to assess grant applications. He was the Chair of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation/Microwave Theory and Techniques Joint Chapter during 2018-19 and the Vice Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Affinity Group in New South Wales during 2017-18. He regularly reviews for several top journals and conferences in his field, including the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, IEEE Access, Asia–Pacific Microwave Conference, International Conference on Electromagnetics in Advanced Applications, AP-S Symposium, and EuCAP.

2019: Raheel delivered two invited talks in Special Sessions at ICEAA-AWPC, in Granada, Spain

2019: Featured article on Flexible Antennas in Wearable Devices selected as Cover for Sensors Journal

2019: Twin antenna system, developed by our team, launched into space aboard world's first entirely Ka-band CubeSat Audacy Zero, deployed from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
