Personal profile


Associate Professor Rod Lane is Deputy Head of Department leading learning and teaching in the Macquarie School of Education, Sydney.  He has a PhD in Education, 24 years of experience teaching in secondary and higher education contexts and has an international profile for his research in conceptual change and educational assessment. Dr Lane has played a substantial role in advising Australian State and Federal Governments in pedagogy, curriculum and assessment. He has numerous awards for excellence in learning and teaching including an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and is Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Dr Lane's research in the field of educational assessment in social sciences led to the formation of a team comprising of senior academics from seven countries to develop an international test to measure the geographical literacy of Year 8 students across the OECD.  This study is intended to form part of the TIMSS Assessment in 2023.  In 2019, Rod was engaged by AITSL to form and lead a research team to write a literature review collating the evidence for the effectiveness of formative assessment.
