Biography

BA (Hons) Psychology, PhD (Psychology)

Dr Ryan McMullan joined the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR) at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) in 2018. Since joining CHSSR, he has applied his experience with experimental and observational research methods to health services research projects. The overall goal of Dr McMullan's work is to improve hospital staff experience and patient safety.

He is a Research Fellow working on several projects, including a simulation study investigating the effectiveness of double-checking medication administration and a project that aims to improve the health system's response when patients are harmed. Previous projects include an evaluation of a professional accountability culture change program across 8 hospitals and an evaluation of the usability of a new electronic record for intensive care in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units. 

He has experience with both quantitative and qualitative research, including cross-sectional surveys, observational studies, experimental studies, simulation studies, and interviews.  

Dr McMullan's interests also include medication safety, cost-benefit analysis, non-technical skills in operating theatres, and distractions and interruptions in clinical settings.
