Biography

BSc (Hons), MPH, PhD

Associate Professor Seema Mihrshahi is a nutritional epidemiologist and public health researcher and joined the Department of Health Systems and Populations in March 2020. Her research spans both ends of the malnutrition spectrum, addressing undernutrition and overnutrition in children and focuses on population-based approaches for the promotion of healthy weight, effective monitoring and surveillance strategies, and approaches to improve healthy eating.

Seema has a background in global health, women’s and children’s health and public health nutrition. She completed her PhD in 2008 on early infant feeding and its associations with diarrhoeal disease and acute respiratory infections in developing countries and she undertook fieldwork for her PhD in Bangladesh. Seema has since participated in research in a variety of contexts and in public health projects in Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, assessing childhood undernutrition and feeding practices and micronutrient deficiencies in women and children. She has developed, implemented and evaluated a number of large research trials related to preventing undernutrition and improving infant and young child feeding.

She has over 90 publications and has been awarded over $6 million in research grants. Seema is currently a chief investigator on the TOPCHILD collaboration, funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, which aims to bring together researchers from around the world to transform the thinking and practices around early childhood obesity prevention. She also works closely with researchers at the Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood. She holds Honorary/ Affiliate titles at the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney.
