Biography

Sharon graduated from Macquarie University with an Honours degree in 2002, and was awarded the university medal in Speech and Hearing Sciences.  In 2005 she received her PhD in Linguistics from Macquarie University.  Her thesis on “Development and Evaluation of a Test of Virtual Spatial Hearing” received a Vice Chancellor’s Commendation as well as the Australasian Speech Science and Technology Association PhD of the Year Award.  In 2006, Sharon was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council Public Health (Australia) Research Fellowship to investigate the diagnosis and remediation of central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) in children.  This work lead to the development of the Listening in Spatialized Noise – Sentences test (LiSN-S) and the LiSN & Learn auditory training software (redeveloped as the Sound Storm app for iOS) for spatial processing disorder (SPD). She worked for the National Acoustic Laboratories from 2005 to 2018. From 2010 Sharon was a Senior Research Scientist heading the CAPD team. Sharon sat on the steering committee responsible for the implementation of the Australian Hearing Central Auditory Processing Disorder service, currently running in over 40 hearing centers around Australia. Her work at NAL included assessment of spatial processing in the hearing impaired population, investigating the underlying basis of spatial processing skills, as well as ongoing development and evaluation of clinical tests for auditory processing, including the Dichotic Digits Difference Test (DDDT), Phoneme Identification Test (PIT) and the Parsing Syllable Envelopes Test (ParSE). Sharon was also responsible for development of the LiSN-U (Universal) test for use with populations for whom English is not their primary language. Sharon is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University, having been awarded a Co-Funded Fellowship with Sonova AG, to develop new auditory processing disorder diagnostic tests and remediation software.
