Biography
Steve holds an LL.B (Hons), MA Cyberculture and Law and a PhD (focused on copyright law and fair use). He has a wide and varied teaching background. He taught media studies, Web design, generic computer skills, networking, music technology and an array of legal areas (including contract, tort, company, criminal, employment, property, family, insurance, media) at the South East Essex College (UK). He also developed and delivered media law components for BA and BSc programmes run in conjunction with the University of Essex. Steve has also taught law for a range of professional qualifications such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Chartered Institute of Insurers, National Council for the Training of Journalists and in addition he ran the Institute of Legal Executives course. Since moving to Australia in 2002, Steve has taught digital media production and media law.
He has served as Program Director for a number of programs including the BA-Media, Bachelor of Media, Bachelor of Marketing and Media, and Interactivity and Games major. Steve has also served on a number of departmental, faculty and university committees concerning learning and teaching, and standards and quality. He is currently the course authority for the Bachelor of Media and Communications, the major in Interactive Design and the Master of Media and Communications.
Steve also produces music under the names INfest8, Konqistador, Other, and z(cluster), and remixes bands from around the world from his studio in Sydney. He has released a number of albums and was an early proponent of online music delivery services. Music production and remixing tie into his research foci on authorship, creativity and technology. He has produced, remixed and collaborated with the likes of The Birthday Massacre, Dream Disciples, Death Abyss, Pleasant Stitch, Coph Nia, The Abyss Collective, and The Proxy, amongst others. He worked on Sara Noxx's 2015 release 'Entre Quatre Yeux', which spent three weeks at #1 in the German charts for alternative music. He has produced ERA-verified creative works 'Nafada' (2019), 'Count to Zero' (2015) and 'Electriker' (2008) which explore authenticity, remixing, and sampled-based approaches to song-writing. Through 2018-2019 he produced 'Nafada' with Konqistador, a collaboration with various female, Arab and Arab/Muslim hip-hop artists. Although released worldwide, 'Nafada' was targeted squarely at the MENA (Middle East, North Africa) region. "Eden, Woman's War" reached #21 in the iTunes charts for Saudi Arabia and was featured on a number of influential Spotify playlists for International Women's Day 2019. In 2023 he performed twice with z(cluster) at Dark Mofo and supported HEALTH. A documentary about the album, Nafada: An Audio Uprising, was released in 2025 at various film festivals internationally to critical acclaim.
