Biography
Theresa Kidd is a clinical psychologist who has worked in the disability and mental health sectors for over 30 years. She is the director of Dr Theresa Kidd Psychology, a private psychology clinic focussed on assisting children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD and other emotional and behavioural difficulties. In addition, she works part time as a postdoctoral research fellow at Macquarie University and is a member of the Centre for Emotional Health, where she is coordinating a national trial investigating the internet-based Cool Kids Taking Control program targeting anxiety and peer victimisation. She completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Curtin University, assessing the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy for anxiety in adolescents with high functioning autism. In addition, Theresa co-developed and managed the Curtin Specialist Mentoring Program (CSMP) that supports Curtin University students on the autism spectrum to successfully engage at university and beyond. Theresa is dedicated to promoting an awareness and understanding of developmental and learning difficulties, as well as providing effective and practical strategies to both parents and professionals, which together have the potential to lead to positive outcomes.
Research interests
With a passion for intervention research, Theresa is interested in the understanding and clinical treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents with a particular interest in how these impact autistic individuals across the lifespan.
Community engagement
Theresa regularly presents to parent groups, educators, clinicians and researchers on understanding and managing emotional health problems in children, particularly in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders and co-occurring mental health problems. Theresa has authored several manuals (with her colleagues at Curtin) used by universities across the world.
