Personal profile

Biography

Dr. Pham is a Macquarie University Research Fellow (MQRF), working on wetlands monitoring in Australia using remote sensing and geoinformatics. He received his MSc and PhD from the University of Tsukuba, Japan under the JICA and the Japanese Government Scholarships, respectively. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship from the RIKEN Centre for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP), Japan, the largest comprehensive research institution comprising a network of world-class research centres and institutes across Japan, and then completed a 12-month Fellowship at Florida International University (FIU), the United States. During his stay at RIKEN and FIU, he applied machine learning algorithms to the interpretation of remotely sensed imagery - achieving a breakthrough in wetlands inventory and monitoring. He was a key member at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture working on the applications of Geographic Information System (GIS) and multispectral remote sensing data for natural resources management.

Research interests

Dr. Pham's research interest focuses on applying innovative mapping techniques and remote sensing technologies using multisensor earth observation (EO) data such as multispectral and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery combined with advanced machine learning methods for monitoring Blue Carbon ecosystems change and understand how natural drivers influence their dynamics (e.g., climate change, sea-level rise, drought, hurricanes). His interest in the application of remote sensing in understanding mangrove, seagrass, and saltmarsh dynamics of Australia.
