Personal profile

Vivek Gupta is Assoc. Professor, NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow and has been an NHMRC career development fellowship awardee. He is "Vision Science" group leader, and neurobiologist with a significant research focus on identifying the mechanisms underlying retinal neurodegeneration in various disease conditions.

Additionally, he has research background in the field of cell and molecular biology, cloning and generation of transgenic mice models, biochemistry, clinical studies, public health and data analysis, yeast and mammalian genomics, developing and testing pharmacological compounds, visual electrophysiology and gene therapy studies. He has a devloped a collaborative network in Australia, India, USA and Europe. His group extensively uses retina as a model to investigate mechanisms underlying retinal disorders such as glaucoma and macular degeneration and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. He is also studying the retinal and optic nerve changes and its correlation with brain imaging and neuropsychological parameters in healthy ageing and Alzheimer’s subjects.

He is extensively involved in targeted gene therapy studies in retina to modulate various signalling pathways and protecting the neurons in disease conditions. Dr. Gupta has undergone extensive postdoctoral training in Switzerland and USA. He has secured competitive grants and published >130 articles. He recently identified pathological accumulation of amyloid beta protein in the retina in Alzheimer’s disease and glaucoma conditions including in human post-mortem tissues.
