Biography
Dr. Vivek Gupta is an Associate Professor and Head of the Vision Science group at Macquarie University. A recipient of both NHMRC Dementia Leadership and Career Development Fellowships, he is a neurobiologist whose research centers on the mechanisms of retinal neurodegeneration in various diseases.
His diverse research background spans cell and molecular biology, cloning and transgenic mouse models, biochemistry, clinical studies, public health and data analysis, yeast and mammalian genomics, pharmacological compound development and testing, visual electrophysiology, and gene therapy. He has cultivated a broad collaborative network across Australia, India, the USA, and Europe.
Dr. Gupta's group uses the retina as a model to investigate mechanisms underlying retinal disorders like glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. His research also explores retinal and optic nerve changes, correlating them with brain imaging and neuropsychological parameters in healthy aging and Alzheimer's patients. He is actively involved in targeted retinal gene therapy studies, aiming to modulate signaling pathways and protect neurons in disease states.
Following extensive postdoctoral training in Switzerland and the USA, Dr. Gupta has secured competitive grants and published over 170 articles. His recent work has identified the pathological accumulation of amyloid beta protein in the retina in Alzheimer's disease and glaucoma, including in human post-mortem tissue.
