Macquarie University is a world leader in the development of photonics technologies. Much of this research focusses on the telecommunications band at a wavelength of 1550nm. The ability to carry out measurements at other bands would dramatically increase the scope of this research. This is especially important for the development of astrophotonics, a transformative approach to astronomical instrumentation, which enables new functionality and better performance. However, these developments are currently hindered by the inability to characterise devices outside the 1550nm band. The requested infrastructure would open up the important 1310nm band, which is important for both telecommunications and astronomical applications.
