Climbing the walls: material culture and bodies in motion

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This research investigates the Powerhouse Museum’s exceptional collection of architectural models, dioramas, and dollhouses. It asks: how do the ideals embedded in model environments shape the bodies, brains, and rhythms of social movement? This research will develop a process for devising virtual worlds based on historical models of idealised spaces. It will interrogate the ideals embedded in the models by investigating how expanded capacities for movement could challenge or reimagine them. The outcomes of this research will be a process for designing or developing virtual worlds through research into historical material culture; a short dance and virtual world prototype film suitable for wide distribution; and a research methodology and potential partnership suitable for applying for external funding. These outcomes will benefit the museum and staff by providing new partners, resources, and methods for animating and communicating the collection.
