Project Details

Description

The project will develop a tech-based research tool aimed at reducing cognitive and social biases in judicial decision-making involving First Nations people. We will use cutting edge natural language processing technology to code published legal cases and collect statistics about the decision-making patterns of individual judges, with a focus on identifying indicators of bias. This will be developed through a co-design process with key stakeholders from the legal sector and community. This will lay the groundwork for a broader empirical study evaluating the effectiveness of using such data as a feedback tool for improving the fairness of judicial decision-making.
