Empowering Climate Resilience: A Sustainable Digital Finance Platform for Central Tablelands Communities

Climate-induced disasters have highlighted the vulnerabilities of rural communities in Australia, leaving them significantly disadvantaged due to a scarcity of financial services and literacy. Its estimated that three million Australians, predominantly in rural locales, are overlooked by mainstream financial institutions, a situation underscored by Good Shepherd Microfinance in 2019. Evidence from national surveys, such as the National Survey of Health and Wellbeing (NSHW) and the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA), underscores the disproportionate suffering of financially excluded communities following disasters. Their struggles stem from an inability to access emergency funds and to make investments in disaster resilience measures. This project seeks to evaluate whether providing access to a digital financial platform, coupled with financial and digital literacy education, could empower communities in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales. The aim is to facilitate better access to loans for recovering from natural disasters and to enable investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, thus enhancing their capacity to recover from disasters.
