Description
Short title: Rexinoids and Retinoid X receptors in glaucoma
Summary: Glaucoma involves retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration along with optic nerve excavation. The mechanisms underlying this damage are not yet clear, with most of the treatment options targeting increased intra-ocular pressure. This proposal investigates the role of endogenous RXR receptors/ligand in glaucoma and mechanisms underlying RXR activation. We will modify RXR using AAV mediated gene therapy and by pharmacological means using a recently identified endogenous ligand as a mechanism based strategy in vision preservation and provide new avenues for treatment.
