Project Details
Description
This project will enhance the way insect pests and plant pathogens are monitored in cotton and mixed farming regions of NSW and the Sunraysia/Riverland. By testing and refining cost-effective traps and diagnostic tools, improving how surveillance data is shared, and working closely with growers through training and extension, the project will deliver practical solutions that strengthen early detection, support better pest management, and improve long-term resilience for the cotton industry and beyond
Layman's description
This project will help farmers by finding better and cheaper ways to keep an eye on insect pests and plant diseases in cotton and nearby crops. It will test different traps and tools to see which ones work best, make it easier to share pest information quickly, and run workshops to show growers how to use these tools. The goal is to give farmers earlier warnings about problems, so they can act faster and protect their crops more effectively.
Key findings
The most effective and affordable traps and diagnostic tools for key insect pests and pathogens in cotton and mixed farming systems will be identified and validated.
Tailored surveillance methods, informed by international best practice, will strengthen early detection of both established and emerging threats.
Standardised data collection and options for digital reporting will improve how pest and disease information is shared with growers, consultants and biosecurity agencies.
Regional training and extension will increase grower awareness and adoption of improved monitoring practices.
Cross-commodity collaboration will ensure tools and knowledge benefit not only cotton, but also grains, horticulture and broader Australian agriculture.
