    Evidence indicates that severe or repeated head trauma – for example during sports and military service – induces neuropathological changes that often progress to overt dementia. Unfortunately, progression-preventing therapies are lacking. Typical neuropathological changes include abnormal clumping of a protein called tau, a process reminiscent of changes in Alzheimer’s disease (a common cause of dementia). This project aims to understand how focal tau pathology after brain trauma progressively spreads to other brain regions and eventually causes dementia. This knowledge will pave the way for developing therapies that can prevent the spreading of tau after injury and potentially prevent the onset of dementia.
