Generative models for musical pieces as trajectories through voice-leading and rhythm spaces

I plan to work with my colleagues at WSU's MARCS Institute to develop new, probabilistic models which explain musical structures and styles in terms of the interplay between aesthetic goals and the sensitivity and resolution of the human hearing faculty. Quantitative models will provide deeper and more objective tools for exploring and comparing musical traditions. We expect to publish work describing the model and using it to map the evolution of musical styles, and to produce and release software for working with the model. We are working toward an ARC Discovery application in 2020.
