Geophysical infrastructure for polar measurements

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Infrastructure: Titanium sheets, 100; pre-amplifiers, 60 (Numeric Resources)

We request specialized equipment for the collection of magnetotelluric (MT) data on ice sheets. MT can provide vital constraints on the factors controlling ice sheet melting and stability. Investment in specialized electrodes, pre-amplifiers and batteries will enable us to carry out full-scale MT campaigns on ice, making Macquarie the only university in Australia equipped to carry out polar MT surveys. This investment in polar infrastructure will set Macquarie apart as a key collaborator in existing and upcoming projects such as the $56 million ARC SRI in Excellence in Antarctic Science and the $37 million NERC/NSF International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration.
