The purpose of this proposal is to carry forward the implementation of a major National Survey of Remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists, a project that aims to investigate and analyse the extent to which art and cultural production that has market potential can provide a viable pathway towards economic empowerment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in towns, settlements and outstations across remote and very remote regions of Australia. The objective of the Survey is to produce a nationally representative database on how individual Indigenous artists in remote Australia establish, maintain and develop their professional art practice. The Kimberley region of northern Western Australia was the first region to be included in the survey (2015-16), followed by three regions in NT and SA (Regions 2, 3, 4), where the survey is underway in 2016-17. Region 5 is designated as Far North Queensland (still to be approved). Region 6 will be a second region in WA.
