2023 MRFF Traumatic Brain Injury Stream 2
This project, led by Australia’s top traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinician researchers, consumer representatives and implementation scientists, aims to support Australian health care providers to consistently deliver best evidence based care to adults with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury. Following a Participatory Action Research model, we will collaborate with Australian adults living with TBI, including older people; their families; and healthcare providers of all disciplines, to understand their experiences and needs, and the barriers and facilitators to effective service delivery. An important focus of our enquiry and subsequent implementation efforts will be three separate groups of adults with moderate-to-severe TBI who are at high risk of inadequate access to best evidence-based care (1) Individuals living in regional and remote areas; (2) culturally and linguistically diverse individuals; and (3) people identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. These foci will be pursued in a culturally responsive manner based on our strong existing collaborations, funding, knowledge and resources, and utilising support from a broad network of organisations to ensure close collaboration with representatives of these groups at all stages of the program.
In-depth understanding of experiences, perspectives and barriers and facilitators of optimal care will be harnessed to tailor implementation of best practice guidelines for addressing cognitive and psychosocial consequences of TBI. Co-designed implementation strategies will build upon identified needs for crucial resources and training, adapted for specific groups and contexts. The implementation processes conducted in this project will provide guidance and the scaffolding to upskill service providers and enhance the experience of individuals with TBI in various parts of Australia, providing a roadmap with prototypes for broader implementation.
