Indigenous Langauge Hub

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

While the lands of the Dharug peoples encompass a large portion of what we now know as Sydney, there are no dedicated programs to the Dharug language. We propose to establish an Indigenous Language Hub in collaboration with the local Dharug community and language speakers. The Language Hub would be hosted on Dharug land, at the Macquarie University Wallumattagul campus, and would provide access to Aboriginal language speakers, resources and workshops that promote engagement with language reclamation.

Language makes us unique and is a platform which allows us to pass on cultural knowledge. Colonisation has placed many of our languages at risk of being lost to the future generations. The Language Hub will be an invaluable resource for Dharug community members to connect with their culture, and with Indigenous peoples nationwide, to promote cultural safety, wellbeing, and self-determination. It will further be a site of reconciliation and provide non-Indigenous peoples an opportunity to engage with Aboriginal language and community.
