Interpreters' coordination in dialogue interpreting

This project, hosted at Macquarie University, aims to advance both research and practice in dialogue interpreting. It investigates how interpreters coordinate interpreter-mediated interaction by managing participants’ interactional access, turn-taking, sequence organisation, repair and other coordination practices, contributing to a new interactional framework for understanding dialogue interpreting. Drawing on conversation analysis and comparative role-play methodology, the project also develops innovative role plays that embed realistic interactional triggers, enabling systematic investigation, training and assessment of interpreters’ coordination skills. The project further examines the implications of emerging AI technologies for dialogue interpreting, with particular attention to interactional coordination, trust, and human–AI collaboration.
