Monitoring Mangrove Ecosystems in Australia using Remote Sensing and Machine Learning Approaches

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This project will assist in better understanding nation-wide mangrove communities to sustainably conserve the high carbon regions by identifying these locations. The project will help governments direct projects towards optimal locations using earth observation data and machine learning techniques for large-scale monitoring of mangrove ecosystems. The geospatial database, which consists of up-to-date spatial distribution maps of mangrove communities, will be used for national greenhouse gas accounting for long-term monitoring of mangroves. The project will assist and support Australia’s blue economy under the National Marine Science Plan by 2025 and the expectation of zero emissions by the Australian government by 2050.
