The overall joint US-Australian project addresses a dedicated research question that the U.S. Department of Defence would like answers to: the topic in question is using biologically inspired techniques for autonomous navigation in robots and vehicles. Neruobiological knowledge of rodents (US team) and insects (Australian team) is teamed up with expertise in computer science and artificial intelligence for the project. Cheng's part at MQ addresses how knowledge of insect navigation can find application in artificial navigation.
