Project Details

Description

The primary goal of this project is to develop fungal biological control agents to combat Varroa destructor, a significant factor in honeybee colony losses worldwide. By creating a sustainable alternative to chemical control methods, the project seeks to reduce environmental impact and improve honeybee health as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. The expected outcomes of the project include the development of a commercially viable biological control option for Varroa mites. This will help reduce reliance on chemical treatments, mitigating issues such as resistance, contamination, and negative impacts on bee health. Additionally, the project aims to enhance pollination services, safeguarding agriculture and preventing economic losses caused by Varroa mite infestations. The project’s target stakeholders include beekeepers, who will benefit from a safer and economical pest control method, as well as agricultural producers, who rely on healthy pollinator populations for crop production. Farmers for whom the cost of pollination will be decreased through an efficient control of Varroa mites. Consumers will also benefit from stable food production and lower costs. Researchers and policymakers will gain valuable insights and regulatory guidelines for sustainable Varroa control worldwide. The project will deliver several key outputs, such as optimizing fungal isolates and formulations, providing data on safety and efficacy for honeybees and their products, analysing field trial results, and initiating guidelines for incorporating fungal biocontrol into IPM. Key activities will focus on the research and development of thermotolerant fungal strains, testing their efficacy against Varroa mites in both laboratory and hive conditions, conducting field trials and safety assessments, and engaging stakeholders through education and training. Overall, this project aims to provide an innovative and eco-friendly solution to protect honeybee populations and safeguard global agriculture.
