Project Details

Description

Damage to our DNA occurs naturally, but defects in its repair are emerging as an important disease process in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). I have obtained exciting new evidence that a protein not previously associated with ALS, sirtuin 7 (SIRT7), performs an important role in DNA repair, but this is defective in ALS. My aim is to investigate these mechanisms and confirm that SIRT7 is important in ALS. This will enable me to obtain important preliminary results for future grant applications based on the role of SIRT7 in ALS. These studies may provide important insights into new disease mechanisms.
