Description
This project examines the emergence of localism in Hong Kong. Localists oppose Beijing's influence in the PRC Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong and promote Hong Kong nationalism and independence. This research project asks: why Hong Kong nationalism, and why now? To answer these questions, a political anthropological approach of close engagement with localist activists over a lengthy time-span is proposed, so as to see the world through their eyes. This project not only contributes to Chinese Studies, but also to the anthropological theorization of national identity construction.
