The personal archive: contemporary autobiographical photobooks from Asia

This project investigates the relationship between photography, the personal archive and the book form by conducting a close analysis of the works of contemporary photographic artists from Asia. This project has significance in bringing together a reconceptualisation of the archive with a focus on the autobiographical as documented and recorded in photobooks. This will develop the limited literature on the photobook as art object. It will contribute to interdisciplinary debates about what constitutes the archival. And, finally, it will address the Eurocentrism of recent photographic criticism by considering photographic art from Asia.
