Understanding legal need and disadvantage in the Australian legal assistance sector: a critical realist study to inform theory and practice.

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Disadvantaged Australians are more likely to experience legal need—a problem with a legal solution—and have greater difficulty accessing an increasingly unaffordable justice system. Yet, both scholars and practitioners in the legal assistance sector poorly understand the nature of legal need and its interactions with poverty and other social problems. In collaboration with the sector, the project will deliver a new conceptual approach to understanding legal need across its social, political, legal and health dimensions; a causal explanation of why some people develop legal need and others do not; and a list of priority actions for the sector.
