Subproject 2 – Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS) methane measuring device

Accurate measurements of enteric methane emissions from individual animals are valuable for making herd management decisions, calculating emissions inventories, and providing data for genetic evaluations, which require extensive records. However, current methane measuring methods vary in precision, scalability and are costly. This two-part project aims to: Subproject 1) assess the accuracy of using routinely collected milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy as a proxy for predicting methane emissions, and 2) develop and validate an affordable methane measuring device based on Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS) for highly accurate in-paddock and in-milking shed measurements. Subproject 1 will be validated using the WMS device developed in subproject 2.
