Abstract
The chapter offers an overview of the development of apocalyptic traditions from the Hellenistic period to Byzantine Christianity and explores the circumstances and mentalities that allowed their flourishment. It concludes with the discussion of doom's day omens associated with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and even with the exchange of populations in 1922.
