Abstract
The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that in modern research, ways and means of implementing the achievements of cognitive linguistics in linguodidactics and methodology are widely discussed. Much attention in such studies is paid to the explanation of the peculiarities of the use of prepositions. As you know, most prepositions (especially primitive ones) are ambiguous, they are difficult to learn, and their use is often subject to interference of the native language. In traditional textbooks, it is proposed to mechanically memorize either only the basic meanings of a preposition, or entire lists of its meanings, and the values in such lists are presented as unrelated. Cognitive linguistics offers an alternative approach to the study of prepositions, which is based on the statement that the various meanings of a preposition are interrelated and form a radial type structure. When analyzing the polysemy of prepositions within the framework of cognitive linguistics, it is taken into account that the conceptual system of a person is conditioned by his perceptual and motor experience, which is transferred to abstract ideas and concepts. The purpose of the article is to present the results of a study on the application of cognitive linguistics achievements in explaining the use of foreign prepositions. The results of the study showed that although the advantage of using the achievements of cognitive linguistics in explaining prepositions has been experimentally proven by many researchers, the ways and means of implementing these achievements require further research. The practical significance of the work is determined by the possibility of using its results in developing effective approaches to teaching prepositions in foreign language classes.
