Abstract
The paper theoretically examines the key cognitive and psychological processes involved in reading literature in a foreign language and discusses how a better understanding of these mechanisms can enhance current methods of employing literary narrative in foreign language instruction. The comprehension process is reconstructed by means of an Interactive-compensatory model that views reading as an interaction between highly interconnected bottom-up and top-down comprehension processes, which unfolds against the backdrop and under the influence of the learner-reader's feelings. The paper also discusses the pedagogical potential of the proposed model and suggests specific strategies for designing a language unit based on a literary text.
