Abstract
Residential electricity consumption has the most potential for rapidly increasing in future electrical markets. This paper analyzes the current residential electricity use in Beijing. An econometric approach was then used to analyze future residential electrical use as an electrical system planning tool. The natural gas price correlated well with residential electricity use with a small cross elasticity coefficient and the summer temperature also greatly influenced residential electricity use. The results were used to develop suggestions for the electrical power industry to anticipate future electrical demand. For example, gas-fired air conditioners can reduce electrical demand and variable pricing can reduce the difference between electrical demand peaks and valleys.
